They were made from a black painted and grained board and included a cut out for the interior light and the ashtray. Wanted something pretty to put under a lounge chair on our new vinyl flooring. The rug is very thick and soft underfoot. I love the "look" of the irregular shape in the room! I have luxury vinyl flooring and put a "pad" between the rug and the floor to protect the floor "just in case." Plus, the chair on the rug is heavy, especially with someone sitting in it. So, I took the extra precaution. I've had this rug for a few weeks and absolutely LOVE it!
